Planting Blueberries – Many Different Methods Are Available for Use
Introduction
This article discusses the various ways one can plant blueberries. You can plant Bare root blueberry plants in late fall after chill or in early spring while the plants are still in dormancy. Plants in containers can be planted any time since they will not experience transplant shock. A preferred orientation is north-south rows when possible to provide a more uniform distribution of sunlight.
Normal plant spacing
Rows should be planted sufficiently far apart so that equipment can be driven down the rows for mulching and machine harvesting. Recommended planting distances for high bush blueberries are 10 feet apart. Highbush blueberries are typically spaced 4 to 5 feet apart within rows depending on the variety. Rabbiteyes are commonly spaced at 5 to 7 feet within a row, with the rows about 12 feet apart because they grow much larger than other varieties.
Denser than normal plant spacing
Denser within-row plant spacing’s for highbush blueberries is another approach. Planting using 2 to 2 ½ ft spacing is now being used on some farms; this effectively doubles the number of plants grown per acre. This type is spacing is not common. Planting more densely results in higher yields during the first five years. This is a major advantage to the overall economics of the system. Beyond the fourth to sixth year, inter-plant competition for such close spacing can create problems, requiring removal of every other plant in the row. This does not present a major problem because highbush blueberries are transplanted without problems to a new field. The new field can thus be quickly established using the plants removed from the old field. Thus the plants are simply moved to the new field at the end of the time of denser planting. In the mean time better blueberry production and larger profits are possible. This is causing a revolution in the planting of blueberries for some farms.
Container planting
For home gardening growing plants in containers is a practical option in cases where space is limited or the soil cannot be amended to the correct pH of between 4.5 and 5.0. For blueberry lovers, least two plants per family member should be planted. This could mean several containers.
Raised bed planting
Raised beds are sometimes required in cases where the drainage is poor such as in clay soils. Although blueberry plants require lots of water if the roots are in standing water the roots will suffocate and the plant can die. We have experienced this in low areas in our fields where the drainage was poor. Another reason you may want to use raised beds is where the surrounding soil pH cannot be easily amended to the correct pH value.
In our case even though we have a farm with thousands of plants we wanted to grow some in our property in town. We found an easy and manageable solution was to build 4 ft wide 10 ft long enclosures made of two by twelves. These were filled with compost, peat moss and pine bark in which the blueberry plants were planted. The advantage of this was it provided an easy to maintain area in which we could easily mow around and maintain.
Planting as part of a landscape
You can also plant blueberries as part of your landscape. Blueberries make beautiful landscaping plants that also produce healthy fruit.
